Brother Mfc-7840W – Wireless Ready Printer/fax From Brother
PC magazine handed their editor’s choice award over to the Brother MFC-7840W back in 2008, and even a year later the unit remains popular due to its well stocked line of implemented features, most notably its wireless networking capability. The unit started out as the well known MFC-7440N and has all the same powerful hardware, plus an 802.11b/g wireless interface, and a handful of boosted features. Also, the MFC-7840W will have Shatner fans rejoicing thanks to Brother’s decision to ditch the old storm trooper color scheme for a neutral, dark grey.
Along with the wireless network modem, Brother has also hung on to the Ethernet and USB ports for those who don’t trust the airwaves, though if you’re shelling out the extra fifty bucks over the base model, it makes sense to do it with a wireless network in mind. That being said, the other perks are not to be left unnoticed. Brother also upgraded the MFC-7840Ws modem to a faster 33.6K bps Super G3over the 14.4K bps of the other model, boosting the fax speed from about six seconds per page to the almost triply fast two seconds per page.
Oddly enough, the 7440N was not print emulation compatible, but the 7840W remedies the problem withPCL®6 and BR-Script 3 drivers and integration. Lastly, Brother has dangled a couple extra little tantalizing features in the buyers eye that are designed to squeeze you for the extra cash: a backlight on the LCD screen making it even easier to read, and a 4 day battery backup that can store your fax data for days at a time even during one of those pesky four day sessions where your office must operate without power, or maybe if someone simply flips the wrong switch on a long weekend, either way, your data will be safe. The 32 MBs of on board memory will see to that, giving you a capacity for up to 600 pages worth of data, not to mention up to 208 phone numbers you won’t have to retype.
Other than the new stuff, you’re still getting all the great hardware that the MFC-7440N had, including a great printer, fax machine, scanner, copier, and even a PC Fax machine, meaning the unit is capable with PC Faxing directly from your desktop. Along with all the upgrades, there are no drawbacks other than the higher price. None of the speed is lost, as the unit still cranks out the pages at 23 sheets per minute. The quality is still there too; printing black text or graphics at a crisp 2400 X 600 dots per inch.
The paper tray is of the fairly standard 250 sheet capacity type with no option for an additional tray, but there is a 35 page automatic document feeder included that will ensure everything is running smoothly, along with a single sheet bypass tray that, in conjunction with a fold out rear output tray, allows for printing on envelopes and thicker media. If you consider all the features of the Brother MFC-7840W, along side the MFC-7440N, either one is a great buy and, wireless or not, Brother has you covered either way.
