Is Trenchless Technology Rated The ‘Greenest' Solution For Construction?
Trenchless Technology is progressively accepted worldwide as being more efficient, less disruptive, environmentally friendly and more cost effective than traditional methods. With the overriding benefit of installed trenchless systems developing and maturing, they become more effective and get closer to achieving massive savings.
The various trenchless methods of construction have clear environmental benefits such as reduced excavation, construction vibration and increased safety. Open cut techniques start construction work from the ground surface, having to remove all the material that is above the utility zone they want to work on. Open cut techniques waste it the material, replace it, and then rebuild the material to solid ground over the pipe to reinstate the ground surface – seemingly this method does not echo environmental friendly benefits. Nevertheless trenchless techniques only work in the immediate area surrounding the utility to reduce the surface disruption. The main difference between the two construction methods is the amount of energy used to remove and replace the material above the utility.
Open cut techniques use a lot of energy when removing material, whereas trenchless techniques allow the installation of utilities to be carried out in a much more efficient manner significantly reducing the environmental impacts of underground work. Trenchless methods reduce the volume of material displaced during underground construction; this is a critical factor in the reduction of greenhouse gases, therefore reducing CO2 emissions. In contrast to the environmentally friendly approach to the removal of materials, open cut techniques utilise a substantial amount of energy.
Trenchless Technology methods minimises surface disruption, especially traffic congestion and noise which are the two biggest complaints from the public on construction. However the trenchless technique significantly reduces traffic congestion, which therefore condenses the generation of air pollution and greenhouse gases.
Guided Auger Boring is the fastest and most cost effective way to install sewers, ducting and pipework. It is also the most environmentally friendly method with the benefits of minimal disruption to road users, pedestrians and other surrounding areas. The trenchless technique is also less disruptive of the environment, as it uses less newly quarried materials and produces less waste. The speed of auger boring is often quicker than open cut methods, especially over deeper and longer installations.
Pipe bursting is an environmentally friendly trenchless method of pipe replacement, with the emphasis on the provision of pipes with minimal disruption. The piping technique can reduce the amount of waste generated, by decreasing pavement excavation and by utilising existing piping methods; this therefore results in an environmentally friendly project.
The public perception of directional drilling has improved after the realisation of the method being environmentally friendly. Often directional drilling is actually used when there are concerns surrounding the environment; the method enables a pipeline to be laid under or through a sensitive area with minimal disturbance. In addition Trenchless Technology reduces the need for scaffold towers; this is a huge advantage over open cut techniques as it would have created obstructions and safety issues in busy locations.
