One of the most important preparations for a family camping holiday is selecting your tent. It should accommodate your whole family if you're going for a family get-together, and it should be able to be set up easily, and able to cope with extreme weather conditions, particularly if you are camping in Britain in the summer!
There are even 9+ person tents that can accommodate a whole extended family. These tents should accommodate comfortable sleeping arrangements for several different people, be them adults or children.
One maxim of camping is to always buy a tent that is able to accommodate 2 people more than you actually need to fit in your tent. Extra paraphernalia will accumulate or one person in your family may gain weight over the years. There is no danger in getting a tent that is way too big for your family because the extra space will not hamper the camping experience, and extra space is always a good thing. These 12 person tents can be purchased new or used for as little as £500, or thereabouts, so there is no real danger of overpaying a little more than your normally would. The extra space can always be used.
Pitching a tent should always be quick, easy, and hassle-free, no matter what the size of the tent so make sure the tent has a specifically designed set-up process that is easy, functional, and efficient. Most large family tents weigh just over 50 pounds and have measurements at least 8 feet by fifteen feet or so.
There is a reason why you should let slightly larger dimensions deter you from getting the largest tent there is because it will not take up any more space than a normal-sized tent for any practical purposes. You should put at least 18 feet of space between your tent and other tents on the campsite so a few feet, give or take, shouldn't make much of a difference. Watch out though for buying a tent so big that you have take (and pay for) two pitches.
The tent is the common living area on a camping trip so it should be sturdy, large, and accommodate all the family's needs. Most large tents have dual front and back awnings, rollback, vented curtains, large side rooms, and a huge centre room. They come in a variety of colours like khaki, beige, or grey. Most family tents should blend in with the natural environment to look more natural out on the campsite, but it is sometimes better to get a colour that is bright red or orange to help with visibility on the campsite, particularly at night.
