How do I tighten Ford Escape manual trans linkage?
This is a 4 cyl. 5-speed '01 Escape with about 130k miles on it. It runs great, but the shifter linkage has gotten mighty sloppy. Is this easily repaired? Could I do it myself? I haven't had a look at it yet -- thought I'd check here first.
You may have to have a set of Rhino ramps and safety jack stands to be able to work under the car. But have a friend run through the gears while the car's parked and the hood is open so you can see the shift linkages move. At every connection point there should be nylon bushings that wear out and need replacing. You might need to remove a cotter pin to remove a bushing.
