A computer desk chair may not seem like a difficult purchase, after all any office supply store has a big selection of them. You can spend well under $100 and get a chair that works, right? Well, it may not be that simple. Let's look at some of the things that you need to consider when buying a computer chair.
The biggest thing you need to factor into your purchase is the ergonomics of the chair. This basically means how it's designed as far as fitting your body properly. Some chairs, while they seem comfortable enough when you sit down, may not be appropriate for computer use.
This is especially true if you spend any real length of time working on your computer. There's a reason that Aeron and Humanscale chairs cost well over $1,000 when you can buy a cheap one for $60 at your local office supply store. The expensive chairs are designed to support your back, your wrists and the rest of your body at the correct position to minimize strain and injuries like carpal tunnel.
That's not to say you need to spend that kind of money on a chair, especially if you aren't spending eight hours a day in it. But you do want to ensure that the chair you choose has proper support.
Look for a chair that can be adjusted to fit your body specifically. Height adjustments are common, but you should also be able to adjust the height and angle of the armrests as well as the lumbar support for your back. Your wrists should be at the same level as your keyboard, and having adjustable armrests lets you align them properly.
The best computer desk chairs also have an angle adjustment so you can tilt the chair forward. This is a more effective - and ultimately more comfortable - position when working at the computer for longer periods of time.
Some chairs also have neck supports which will help to keep your neck from getting strained when working for long periods. This is not absolutely necessary, but many people prefer it.
Your computer chair is one thing that you should spend a little more on, rather than looking for the cheapest model out there. You'll likely have it for years to come, and your health and comfort is important.
