Good question! It makes one wonder with all of the engineering companies downsized or completely out of business. Even the number of support staff, designers, and CAD operators have drastically reduce as the number of engineers have fallen. Just think when the demand for civil engineering returns will we be able to meet the demand. Will many of those missing engineers come back?

For over 30 years I have worked in engineering profession in the Las Vegas area. Nearly everyone I have known over those years has left the valley, accepted employment in a different profession, or is unemployed. Unfortunately, many of those individuals who are unemployed have reached the end of their benefits, and have no idea what they will do next.

The majority of the Las Vegas civil engineering firms have had a significant staff cut since the start of the recession. If still in business, many companies are less than half their former size. Some of the larger companies at their peak employed over 100 people in their Las Vegas offices, today those same offices are fewer than 10 people.

We know that when the Residential and Commercial developers return to the market, civil engineering services will once again be in high demand. Who can say whether most engineering firms can gather the necessary staffing levels to meet that expected demand? One only knows if the majority of engineers, CAD Operators, and Designers will want to return to the profession.

No one really has a crystal ball as to when will everything return to pre-2008 norms, but there are several market indicators that suggest that perhaps in one to two years the recovery maybe well on its way. What can an engineering company do now to prepare for the increase in demands for its professional services - Take the time to stay in touch with your laid-off employees. Let them know that as soon as you can you will bring them back on board. If possible when the comes the company will assist those who away to return.

  1. Build New Possible Employee Relationships - Many unemployed professionals may feel abandon. A phone call or a letter may go a long way with them. Right now in your local area there are probably a number of unemployed engineers and technical individuals that are more than willing to go work right now. These individuals would be elated to know that you care enough to keep in contact with them, and that you want to give them a job when you are able.
  2. Obtaining New Resources - You can find a number engineering companies who need capitol and are willing to sell some of their equipment for a really good price. Depending on your available cash, you just might be able to pick some of these items. Since many civil engineering firms don't have many long term contracts, they are not worth much outside of the tangible items like office equipment, vehicles, equipment, and computers. If you have an area to store these resources, these items can be used for your future business expansions.
  3. Gaining Expertise in New Markets - If your company drastically reduced workload you might want to contemplate be trained in new fields that would be an advantage for your firm. Certain industries will recovery faster than others. Depending on which markets recover first, you may need to gain additional expertise by either training or hiring. Perhaps the leading market to recover from the recession is green technologies. If your firm does not have the LEED qualified professionals on staff, you will need to get the necessary training or your will have to hire these individuals. Many government contracts are requiring the completed projects to meet or qualify for LEED certification. If your firm is a certified LEED consultant then you have an advantage on these government contracts.
