The very first three wheel front end skid loader was the invention of brothers Louis and Cyril Keller in their Minnesota machine shop in 1957. The Keller brothers created the loader to help in cleaning the turkey manure in a barn of a neighbor. The compact and lightweight loader, which has a back caster wheel could turn within its own length, which being able to perform the tasks that are likewise performed by a normal front end loader.
Later on in 1958, the manufacturing firm Melroe located in Gwinner North Dakota bought the ownership and rights to the loader of the Keller and at the same time employed the brothers to continue improving on their invention. The partnership resulted in the invention and production of M-200, the introduction of which was not until the end part of year 1958.
The skid loader boasts of double front drive wheels that are independent of each other and a caster wheel at the back, a 12 engine and a lift with a 750 pound capacity. Two years after they introduced the loader with caster wheel, they replaced it with rear axle. The M400 loader was also introduced, and hence the birth of the very first 4 wheel skid loader.
Bobcat name was added in 1962 to provide description to the key features and properties of the machinery. The power of M400 comes from a 15.5 horse power engine. By middle of 1960s, the loader advanced with the introduction of loader M600.
Aside from the numerous Bobcat rubber tire skid loader equipments, there also exist all wheel steer loader as well as compact loaders. The latter provide lesser disturbance on the ground and have better control even on soft, wet and muddy grounds.
